The book of Exodus doesn’t start with Moses, before he is even seen we have the portraits of brave women who are in place by God’s sovereignty. They use the means given to them to express their allegiance, loyalty and faith in the one true God.

The word “Exodus” means “going out” and what we will find in the book is a birth narrative not only of Moses but of the nation of Israel. We will see God working again and again as a strong Deliverer and a foretelling of Jesus, the better Moses, that would come!

Know Your Adversaries

Peter spent the first chapter essentially saying “know your scripture” and in chapter 2 he is going to say “know your adversaries.” In this part of the letter Peter is going to speak out against false teachers using a strong and organized argument with biblical analogies and a word of encouragement that God knows how to rescue the Godly and execute righteous judgement.

A Lifelong Pattern and a Warning

Peter encourages these believers to have a lifelong pattern of growth in Christlike character. He reiterates that this is the key to fruitful ministry, abiding in Christ and being made like him. He also warns them of false teachers and begins to refute them by establishing reason to expose their teachings as false.

Make Every Effort

Peter opens his letter with the reminder that the ability to live a life of godliness comes through the divine power of God at work within us. He encourages by teaching them, God is a God of great glory and great excellence and in Him are very great and precious promises. He then shifts his instruction to the consistent teaching of the New Testament that growth in godliness requires effort on the part of the Christian. God is doing the work even as we work.

Intro to 2 Peter

2nd Peter is a letter written from Peter to the same group of churches as 1 Peter, but acts in many ways Peter’s farewell speech. He offers a final challenge that the followers of Jesus be a people who never stop growing. He warns them of false teachers and addresses those who are speaking out against him with personal experiences and a deeper understanding of the scriptures. Come learn with us as we spend time unpacking all this letter has for us!

Peter continues the exhortation to suffer in a godly way, looking to Christ as our example in all things. He encourages us with the reminder that we are stewards of God’s grace and as stewards, there are certain ways we should live our lives.

Peter is going to issue a call to us to not retreat, to not hide, but to live courageously for Christ and the challenge to be ready to give an answer for what we believe.
