"God's Plan Includes Second Chances"

Jonah is possibly the only person to ever pray from the belly of an animal, but when he was rescued by God, the location of his prayer didn’t matter. He was given a second chance to obey God and we have all been given many chances and a lot of mercy and grace. It’s from Jonah’s prayer that we learn God hears us no matter where we are and God alone can rescue us in order to get back on the path of His plan for our life.

The final chapter of Jonah shows that Jonah's preferences are strong. He preferred to hate the people of Nineveh and wanted to see that city destroyed. When it didn’t happen, Jonah let God know that he was upset. We all have preferences! To have desires is to be human, but as followers of Christ, our desires and preferences should be aligned with God’s. The good news is when God interrupts our preferences, it is best for us so we can become more like Christ.

We live in a day when messages can come to us many different ways. In the Book of Jonah, this prophet was the only one called by God to give them an important message. They were commanded to repent from their wickedness and obey God alone! That message is the same for all who don’t personally know Jesus and the Church, like Jonah, is the carrier of that amazing message. It’s a message of love. It’s a message of grace. It’s a message that invites all to be a part of God’s family.

We have heard it said that God works in mysterious ways. That is true! However, there are also times when we see how God operates. In the first chapter of Jonah, this popular story shows that God sovereignly uses His creation to see His desires fulfilled. This includes mankind. It is an amazing truth to realize that God desires for us to be a part of His plan.
