Deuteronomy 5:20 says: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Jesus says in Matthew 12:36—you must give an account on Judgment Day for every idle word you speak.

Jesus reminds us that what we say reveals what is in our hearts. What kinds of words come from your mouth? That is an indication of what your heart is really like. You can’t solve a heart problem, however, just by cleaning up your speech. You must allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with new attitudes and motives; then your speech will be cleansed at its source.

Envy is a useless emotion, because God is able to provide everything we really need, even if he does not always give us everything we want. To drive out envy, we need to practice being content with what we have. The apostle Paul emphasizes the significance of contentment in Philippians 4:11. It’s a matter of perspective. Instead of thinking about what we don’t have, we should thank God for what is ours and strive to be content. After all, our most important possession is free and available to everyone—eternal life through Christ.

Ephesians 4:28 - Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. We can cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way we live. Paul teaches we should be forgiving, just as God has forgiven us. We should act in love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ, just as God acted in love by sending his Son to die for your sins.

This use of the term “adultery” unites the first, second, and seventh commandments, and reminds us that the Ten Commandments are expressions of a single covenant with God, rather than some kind of top-ten list of rules. Therefore, work that requires or leads us into idolatry or worshipping other gods is to be avoided.
