Make Wisdom Your Obsession

Today marks the end of our series in Proverbs. All along the way Proverbs has recognized that in reality you and I are making choices about the kind of people we are going to be. When you stop to think about it, every moment of every day we are faced with choices about the paths we are going to walk in life…the words we’re going to speak…the actions we’re going take, and the attitudes we’re going to display. Recognizing that reality, Proverbs attempts to coach us towards God’s path. Proverbs has tried to offer us wisdom, insight, knowledge, Holy Spirit led common sense and discernment that will enable us to walk according to God’s ways and God’s paths. And when we walk along God’s path through life we enjoy his direction, guidance, and watch-care over our lives…and we enjoy all the fruitfulness of that way of life.

Walking in Wisdom

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been making our way through the book of Proverbs. Proverbs is one of those books I remember growing up that my mom would regularly encourage me to read. A proverb a day makes the stupid gene go away. I read a quote that gets at the practical impact wisdom can have on our life. “Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.” Wisdom impacts your life, so you want to pick up the phone when it calls. While we have been uncovering the benefits of wisdom over the last couple of weeks, as we turn to chapter 4, we will understand how we acquire wisdom.

Wisdom’s Benefits, Part 2

We’re continuing with our Wisdom Calling series this morning and we’ll be looking at the first eight verses of chapter three. If you noticed my uncreative title, let me explain. This chapter is really a continuation of what Brian walked us through last week in chapter two. But it drills down on one key area that Brian showed on his positive reinforcement loop image. The loop illustrates when wisdom is cultivated and practiced, you thrive. And that’s precisely what we’re going to see unfold in our text this morning.

Wisdom's Benefits

God is the origin and source of wisdom and affectionate reverence opens the valve allowing wisdom to flow into our lives. However, the “fear of the Lord”—affectionate reverence—is only the beginning…because wisdom must be implemented to be activated. Remember wisdom by itself is unwise. You only enjoy wisdoms benefits and blessings when you apply it to your everyday life situations. Wisdom will not be attained or experienced by only knowing the wise to do; one must do it!

Wisdom is personified as a woman who calls out in the most obvious places possible to all who will listen to her. And she has an important message for each of us today about how to avoid self-defeating…self-destructive behavior in our lives.
