The Tongue - Part 1

The tongue can either be like a butcher (cut to harm) or a surgeon (cut to heal). Proverbs has so much wisdom about the tongue, our words and the power of both life and death that our words bring.

Most importantly, we are going to look at what Proverbs teaches us about the source of the words we speak – that our tongues and our hearts are weathered together.

This message on the tongue is part one of two on this important topic in Proverbs.

The Walls of Self-Control

Everybody is normal until you get to know them; every one of us has problems; every one of us has a battle in our lives between what the Bible says is the "flesh" and the "Spirit." We all have addictions where the impulses of our bodies (our "flesh") seem to take over self-control. Without self-control in our lives, our own passions and desires will enter into our lives and can ravage us. Proverbs tells us that self-control is like the walls of a city. When you take down the walls of self control, you open yourself up to all kinds of things. One of the things that is opened up in our lives when we lack self-control is that we can become addicted to any number of things. We will be exploring the root of all our addictions – self-control.

The Paradox of Generosity

Radical generosity is completely counter-intuitive in our day. Common sense would lead us to believe that holding on to our possessions is a more certain way to wealth. It's a paradox. In the Bible, we're told that the best way to wisely handle our money, and to get even more, is to scatter it. In other words, the best way to handle your money is to be wildly and radically generous with it. Don't save it and accumulate it for your own purposes. Don't waste your life by playing it safe. Use what God has given you and be wildly generous with it.
