We’ve learned that this season before the return of Jesus is for training us to be followers of Jesus, it’s a season for turning away from certain things that are not like Jesus, and it’s a season for testifying about Jesus in word and deed. But what good is any of that without also trusting him?

A Season for Testifying

Our third lesson of Advent comes again through the great prophet, John the Baptist. Last week we listened to him exhorting us to repent; this week, we observe him modeling how to prepare for the coming of Jesus. John lived to testify!

“Repent” is the word most closely associated with John the Baptist. But we so quickly want to dismiss it as some old-fashioned idea whose time has come and gone. This Sunday we’re going to see that the call to repent is still valid and actually brings with it some really good news.

However, as we look toward the Advent season that begins December 3, let’s prepare our hearts by considering what it means to live in the period after the Ascension of Jesus, but before his sure return.
