TRUTH: As we associate with people who are oppressed, we are practicing love.

TRUTH: As we associate with people who are oppressed, we are practicing love. Associating with the lowly… 1. Separates out fake followers James 1:26-27 :: If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. 2. Gains mercy in judgement James 2:13 :: For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. Reasons we should associate with the lowly… 1. Models faith in Jesus James 2:1 :: My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2. Reveals holy thinking James 2:4 :: have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 3. Mirrors God’s heart James 2:5 :: Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 4. Honors people James 2:6a :: But you have dishonored the poor man. 5. Protects us from evildoers James 2:6b-7 :: Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? 6. Keeps me from sin James 2:8-12 :: If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. What does this mean for me? 1. External appearance is not the basis for my LOVE 2. My level of Gospel understanding is demonstrated by my action toward the lowly

The Way of Love - Never Ends

TRUTH: Love does not expire! • June 24, 2018 • Jason Smith

TRUTH: Love does not expire! Love never ends because… 1. God is love 1 John 4:8 :: Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 2. God is eternal Revelation 1:8 :: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Psalm 90:1-2 :: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3. Love is eternal 1 Corinthians 13:8 :: Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. What does this mean for me? 1. As long as there is God, there will be love 2. Since God’s love never stops, I can be assured of it 3. Since love will always exist, the call to walk in it will never cease

The Way of Love - Endures

TRUTH: Love does not retreat in the midst of challenge! • June 17, 2018 • Jason Smith

TRUTH: Love does not retreat in the midst of challenge! I endure because… 1. God’s grace is too great to keep for myself 2 Timothy 2:10 :: Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2. The reward is too great to miss Matthew 10:22 :: and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 3. It is the example of the One I pursue! Hebrews 12:2 :: looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. What does this mean for me? With Jesus, I’m capable of enduring more than I think

The Way of Love - Is Not Irritable

TRUTH: Being irritable overshadows our attempts to love • June 10, 2018 • Jason Smith

TRUTH: Being irritable overshadows our attempts to love 1. It is self-centered Luke 9:12 :: Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 2. It impacts discernment Luke 9:13 :: But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 3. It robs us of joy Luke 9:17 :: And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces. What does this mean for me? S - Stop, repent, and ask T - Trust a promise O - Obey in faith P - Prepare for the moments
