TRUTH: Weeping with another is the overflow of loving well

In the midst of sharing in another’s sorrow…

1. We demonstrate love
John 11:5 :: Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:36 :: So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

2. We affirm the unity of the church
John 11:16 :: So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

3. We help maintain perspective
John 11:25-26 :: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

4. We stay connected to God
John 11:41b :: And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

5. We are a witness to others
John 11:42 :: I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”

What does this mean for me?
1. The level of sorrow we feel for another is indicative of the depth of our relationship
2. To share in one’s joy will require us to also share in their sorrow
