TRUTH: God does not overlook oppression, and serves justice to oppressors 1. God is saddened by oppression Amos 5:1 :: Hear this word, Israel, this lament I take up concerning you: 2. The oppressed are not above becoming oppressors Amos 5:7 :: There are those who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground. 3. Injustice has no reward Amos 5:11 :: You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. 4. Repentance leads to grace Amos 5:15 :: Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. 5. God is pleased with action, not lip service Amos 5:23-24 :: Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

TRUTH: God’s faithfulness provides hope to an unjust world The reality… Habbakuk 1:2 How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? 1. The world is full of evil and injustices abound Habbakuk 1:4 Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. 2. God sometimes uses the unjust for His purposes Habbakuk 1:5 “Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told. 3. Injustice will not be overlooked by God Habbakuk 2:20 The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him. The reaction… Habbakuk 2:4 “See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright— but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness— 1. Remember God’s faithfulness Habbakuk 3:2 Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. 2. Trust God’s righteousness Habbakuk 3:16b Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. 3. Praise God’s victory Habbakuk 3:19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.

TRUTH: Racism has no place in the Kingdom 1. All are created by God Genesis 1:27 :: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 2. Are all descended from the same parents Genesis 3:20 :: The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 3. All are equally valuable to God Acts 10:34 :: So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality 4. All are equally welcome to salvation in Christ John 3:16 :: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 5. All people have access to heaven Revelation 7:9 :: After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands 6. All people deserve to be loved unconditionally James 2:9 :: But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

TRUTH: Justice matters because it is foundational to the One whom we follow! 1. God’s character is something to be praised Psalm 89:5-7 :: Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? 2. Justice is foundational to God’s character Psalm 89:14 :: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 3. God’s justice is not just retributive, but restorative Psalm 89:33-34 :: but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. 4. As image bearers, we all have a responsibility to seek justice Genesis 1:27 :: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 5. Sin leans us toward self-preservation and toward injustice Genesis 4:7 :: If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
