Jonah And The City

May 26, 2024 • Ryan Shervik • Jonah, Romans 15:1–13, Psalm 139:7–12

Often when we think of Jonah we refer to the story as Jonah and the Whale. But in reality these four chapters are much more about Jonah and the City than they are about a whale. The whale makes for a wonderful miracle story and there are things we learn about God and his character in this portion of the story but the entire story is about a man called by God to go to a city and his response to that call, to God, to the people of the city, and himself because of it all.

“We must allow the Word of God to confront us, to disturb our security, to undermine our complacency and to overthrow our patterns of thought and behavior.”

- John Stott

This quote fit well last week as we looked at the Good Samaritan but this week it will come into even sharper focus as we look to the story of Jonah and the call that we all have been given. We are daily faced with the same fork in the road that Jonah faced and we too have a decision to make. And after today you may begin referring to this story of redemption of a people as Jonah and the City instead of the Whale.
