In today’s message, an 85-year-old man named Caleb steps forward to claim a promise God made to him 45 years ago. God made this promise because Caleb followed God wholeheartedly. We don’t have to be a Bible hero to follow God wholeheartedly. We just learn how to view the world through eyes of faith. We keep on trusting and believing and obeying no matter what happens, and we remember that the God we hold on to is more faithful and powerful than we can understand.

The book of Joshua begins where Deuteronomy ends, with the nation of Israel poised to cross the Jordan River and take possession of the Promised Land that God had given them. Before the Israelites could cross, God had to appoint Joshua as leader and give Him marching orders for the future. Sometimes God does that in our lives, pushing us forward in our faith. Scripture for study Joshua’s commission and call- Joshua 1:1-9 Discussion Questions 1. Do you think Joshua was surprised when God appointed him to be the next leader? Why or why not? 2. What do you think Joshua might have been most afraid of when God commissioned him? If you were Joshua, what would you have been most afraid of? 3. The Bible said that the Lord spoke to Joshua. If God has spoken to you, what has it sounded like? Did you recognize His voice? How? 4. God reassured Joshua as part of his calling. What kind of reassurance has God given you in your life? 5. God seems to link adherence to the Law with inner peace and success in life. How are those elements linked? 6. God encouraged Joshua not to be discouraged. What in your current circumstances might cause you to be discouraged? Read Joshua 1:5-9 together as a group for encouragement.
