If anyone had it all, it was Samson. He was born with amazing physical strength, he accomplished superhuman feats, but in the end, he made terrible personal decisions, he couldn’t control himself, and in spite of his gifts, he never lived up to his potential. He was his own worst enemy.

So far, the men and women we’ve studied have been heroes in every sense of the word. They have faced challenges, had their faith tested, and they have overcome. Now it’s time to look at a guy whose experience wasn’t so heroic. This week’s character is Jonah, the guy best known for spending three days and nights inside a giant fish.

Because of the way the book of Esther is written, I believe there is a better way to study it than a simple character study. The text has relatively little to say about Esther the woman. Instead, she is more a part of a larger story that is a window into the way God works in the world on behalf of His people.

Gideon is the story of how God chooses ordinary people to join Him in what He’s doing in the world. God is still at work in our world today, and God is looking for available men and women who will answer the call to partner with God in doing Kingdom work. If you furnish the willing person, God will furnish the plan, the energy, and the power to get things done.
