A church with an eternal perspective interprets the events of life from a spiritual point of view. They recognize when the path of culture diverges from the path of God’s holiness, and they take a stand for godliness. A church with an eternal perspective is one that walks by faith and not by sight.

Churches that God uses know why they exist, and they live into the purpose of their existence. And the same goes for its members. So why were we created, and what is our purpose? The answer is found in Ephesians 2: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph. 2:10)

In Genesis 4, Cain asked God a question that was disrespectful and sarcastic, and yet in a weird way relevant to us today. When God asked Cain where his brother Abel was, Cain said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” That is the question I would like for us to consider today: Are we expected to be our brother’s keeper? Do we have any responsibility for the spiritual health and well-being of our friends and neighbors? If we want to be that kind of church, then we must ask ourselves three important questions that clarify our heart and our methods. The questions examine our motives, our direction, and our message.

Churches can grow to have thousands of attenders, they can have hundreds of people involved in ministry, they can receive thousands of dollars in giving each week, but unless they are willing to humble themselves before God in confession and repentance, they will not be useful in God’s Kingdom.
