Last week, one of our younger members asked me “How come God doesn’t speak to us like He did in the Old Testament?’ That’s a wonderful question, but when the all is said and done, the real question is, ‘Does God still act like He did in the Old Testament?’ As understand the lesson of faith that is the life of Moses, we understand that God is still working to fufill His promise and deliver His people.

“How sweet to hold a newborn baby” That song came out before we became parents. And one day, I found out just how true those lyrics are. But more truth was to be found, for while holding your own child for the first time is an indescribable moment, when the time comes to hold your children’s children, well, you are blessed beyond measure. As in the example of Jacob, the promise of faith taken hold of by the generations has more meaning than we can comprehend.

It’s a boxing term. When the fighter can no longer continue, when defeat is inevitable, the trainer will ‘throw in the towel,’ literally. Over time, it has come to be applied to any situation where the only option we have is to lose. It means to give up or to admit that no hope exists. The term says there’s no future that has any promise. By faith, Isaac saw past the failure around him. By faith, he passed on a promise. By faith, he saw a future of hope and blessing. In Christ, we see past that black day on Calvary. By faith, we look to a certain day of a promise fulfilled.
