Faithfulness

October 31, 2021 • Pastor Chris Whitehead

The final word God uses to describe His character is faithfulness. It is also translated as truth. It’s related to another word you’ve probably heard before, amen, which is a Hebrew expression meaning, “that’s truth!” When faithfulness is used of people, it describes reliable and stable character or trustworthiness. To say that God is faithful means He is trustworthy. Jesus came on behalf of God’s faithfulness. He is the faithful King, whose kingdom will endure forever, and who invites all nations to trust God.

Loyal Love

October 24, 2021 • Pastor Ben Phipps

The fourth word (phrase) God uses to describe His character is "abounding in love" or "loyal love." In the Old Testament, this word combines the ideas of love, generosity, and enduring commitment all into one. It describes an act of promise - keeping loyalty that is motivated by deep personal care. God’s love was never about our worth. It’s a display of God’s generous loyalty to His promise. When we experience the purity and power of God’s love shown through Jesus, it compels us to reimagine why and how we can show love back to God and to the people around us.

Slow to Anger

October 17, 2021 • Pastor Chris Whitehead

The third word (phrase) God uses to describe His character is slow to anger. Most people see the God of the Bible supremely angry, striking people down for their sins. The word picture used in the Old Testament to describe slow to anger is literally, long of nose. It’s a metaphor, using our experience of hot anger to describe how God feels when he witnesses human evil. In Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we see God’s anger at evil and His love for people working together to provide forgiveness and life for a humanity lost in self-ruin. God is extremely patient, working out His plan to restore people to His love.

Gracious

The second word God uses to describe His character is gracious. In the Old Testament, this word is translated as favorable or delightful. Often the word is used to describe a gift given with delight or favor. The most extreme kind of grace is showing favor to someone who should get what they deserve not a generous gift. This characteristic is manifested in the coming of Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection are offered to us as a generous gift of life that is more powerful than death.

Compassionate

Pastor Chris Whitehead • Exodus 34:6

The first word God uses to describe His character is compassionate. The root of this word is used 99 times in the Old Testament. All these references are derived from the noun, womb. The connection evokes an image of tender care of an infant when it is most vulnerable. As we experience pain and suffering in our broken world, the first characteristic that God wants us to experience from Him is His deep compassion found in Jesus.
