Turmoil Within

Do you ever feel like there's a spiritual game of tug-of-war being played within yourself. We often sway from faith to faithlessness, obedience to disobedience, and from hope to hopelessness. The same was true for David, a man after God's own heart. As we look at 2 chapters near the end of 1 Samuel, we see David's struggle within.
Ensuring Future Faithfulness

Wouldn't it be nice if, after one spiritual victory, faithfulness in that area came easy? It's not that simple. The Lord calls us to continue to trust Him and continue exercising obedience. As we continue our journey through 1 Samuel, we see David struggle in an area of previous success.
God's Timing

Let's be real. Living a consistently faithful relationship with the Lord can be difficult. Though we have seasons of faithful obedience, we also have moments or even seasons of failure. God, however, is consistently faithful to us. This week, for the first time, we see a record of David failing to trust God, taking matters into his own hands. Fortunately for David, and us, God uses flawed people!
Hesed

As we continue through 1 Samuel, we see the covenant friendship of David and Jonathan be tested. It's this friendship, this covenant that helps David endure in the midst of overwhelming difficulty. Like David, we too need to look to a covenantal love - the love of God for us, His people.

As we press on in our journey through 1 Samuel, we continue to contrast King Saul and his son Jonathan. Jonathan chooses to follow God's anointed king, while Saul positions himself up against God's anointed. Like David, today Jesus is also seen as a threat or He is embraced as King. There is no middle ground.
