Matthew 28:18

- I wanted to go back and focus our attention on two words in verse 18, where Jesus says “all authority” has been given to him. To discover what that means, we went back through the gospel of Matthew looking at all the ways that the word “authority” is used in relation to Jesus. It was an incredibly rich study for me, and I hope it was the same for the church. I took the opportunity because of the move, and because the focus was on “go and make disciples” to tell some of the early stories from Calvary, in how we got here, and what the Lord has done. - Because Jesus commissions the women to pass along his instructions to his disciples, this seems like it’s contrary to Paul’s instructions about women in 1 Timothy 2. So, in this study, we looked at both the role and place and significance of women in the New Testament, and then looked afresh at the qualifications for an overseer in 1 Timothy 3. - Our Bible Study was from the first 10 verses of Matthew 28, which is Matthew’s record of the resurrection. We looked at the details he gave us, in that it was on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to view the tomb, and how they were commissioned by the angel, and then by Jesus to share the good news with the disciples. - In our text, Jesus’s body is buried by Joseph of Arimathea, and the Jewish leaders request a seal and a guard. It’s a fascinating passage because of the repeating structure. We talked about the necessity of Jesus’ death and burial and how it had to be that same day and a rich man doing it. Beyond that, we saw the things that Jesus’s death accomplished. - This week we studied the section in Matthew where Jesus is on the cross and darkness covers the land. He cries out “My God, My God why have you abandoned me?” and then yields up his spirit. We reviewed crucifixion, looked at the reference to Psalm 22, the way Jesus died, and then what happened spiritually, naturally, and to humanity when He died. - In our text, it's interesting to note how little details Matthew provides about the crucifixion itself. What Matthew does provide is lots of details of all the ways and how much Jesus was mocked. This seems to be Matthew's emphasis in this chapter. So, we consider first the geography involved in all that's happening to Jesus, and then noticed the only interruption in the mocking which is how Simon of Cyrene carried the cross. Matthew 27:11-16

- In our passage, we see the mistrial of Jesus before Pilate. In it, we are warned to not be like Pilate, and to be wary of the crowd, especially when it becomes mob rule. It’s interesting to see that the only person that advocated for the innocent was Pilate’s wife. We closed by seeing how Jesus can identify and befriend anyone and everyone who has been a victim of the unjust violence of the mob, been rejected, despised and ganged up on. - In our study this week, we see the grief of both Peter and Judas side by side. Judas handles his remorse in all the ways that we consider to be conscientious and mature, yet still went and hanged himself. Peter responds only by tears, yet is restored and has the privilege of preaching the first public sermon after the ascension of Christ. Why are their outcomes so different? - Jesus is brought before Caiaphas in a hearing to find a charge against him. The only charge that sticks is that He is the Messiah. But, when asked the question, Jesus answers it in a way that can only be understood in his relation to being God. Keywords: Trinity, Messiah, Divinity, Brownies

- These three statements by Jesus here at his arrest have been used throughout the centuries as the reason why Christians would embrace the ideas of nonviolence and pacifism. This goes all the way back to the church fathers and continues today in the Eastern Orthodox side of the church and the Anabaptist strain of our Western churches. In this study, we looked at those three statements, an explanation of nonviolent ideas, and then more Scripture from both the Old and New Testament to hopefully arrive at a more informed understanding. - In our passage, it’s evident that God knows everything, including things in the future. He knows our future decisions. What does He do with that knowledge? Does He use it against us? - Matthew shifts gears from the Olivet Discourse, and gives us a contrasting scene between the party at Caiaphas’s courtyard, and the meal at the home of Simon the Leper. When we compare Matthew’s version of this event, it becomes evident what details Matthew conveys as important in teaching us to observe everything Jesus commanded. Matthew 25:31-46

- In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus clearly delineates between those who God will accept into His Kingdom on Judgement Day and those He will not. However, if not taken in context, one can quickly misunderstand the words of Jesus. In this study, we deal with a number of misconceptions, but in particular, that our good works for the "least of these" are what save us. The Bible is clear that it is by faith that someone is "saved" and brought into a relationship with Jesus. We can't do anything to deserve salvation. Serving the poor, the naked, the stranger, the hungry, the thirsty, the prisoner all flows out of a gratefulness for the salvation Jesus provided on the cross. At the end of this message, we're left with some practical advice when we consider the question: How can we be more intentional about living by the Spirit and serving "the least of these"?
