Jesus has been explaining to his disciples that they will face persecution, but he tells them they do not need to be afraid. If God is on their side, there is nothing to be afraid of. Disciples of Jesus are to carry the gospel message being courageously fearful, uncompromisingly loving as privileged ambassadors of Christ.

At the end of the Mission Discourse, Jesus recognizes that conflict, suffering, and even familial unrest lay ahead for His followers. But as He always does, He prepares us for the road ahead with instruction for His modern-day disciples. Jesus instructs us to both disciple others and be discipled ourselves until we receive our reward.
