Jacob, struggled against God to gain his birthright, he created unnecessary conflict in his life with his scheming. He didn't surrender to God, but had he surrendered to God, he would have made his life a lot easier and better. God promised Abraham a large progeny, but after giving him a son God tests Abraham's faith by telling him to sacrifice his only son. Of note, this is the first time in the Bible the word "love" is used. Abraham bows to the will of God, even not knowing what will happen on the mountain. When Abraham left Ur and arrived in Canaan, God said He would give him THIS land. God promised him several times about a land, descendants and a blessing. God made a covenant with Abraham that would ensure the perpetuation of his house and that the Messiah would come from his seed.
