April 24, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 1:1–9
When we start on this path of salvation, we find that we still have to contend with the flesh and with an enemy who wants to deceive and destroy us. We live in a culture much like Corinth with its moral degradation and snares of the enemy, designed to turn us away from God and His ways. Join Pastor Lloyd for this opening of First Corinthians which lays the foundation for the rest of the study.
Discovering Unity at the Cross
May 1, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 1:10–25
The message of the culture divides and is diametrically opposed to the message of the cross where God's people unite together at the foot of the cross. Here, we can be encouraged about who we are becoming in Christ as we stumble along this path of salvation. This segment addresses divisions in the church, then and today.
Consider Your Calling
May 8, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 1:26–31
Even in the early church, as the Holy Spirit was so powerfully moving, the Corinthians still encountered problems and divisions. We find that this is normal and we face it in the present day as well. In a world that idolizes and pursues monetary riches, this passage shows that the treasures of this world are all around us, namely in the souls of friends and neighbors. In Christ who died for us, our eyes are opened, we find our calling and our worth. Hence, we consider our calling in this passage with Pastor Lloyd.
Spiritual Wisdom
May 15, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 2
In Paul's letter to the Corinthians, the apostle addresses divisions in the church and includes reminders to love people as they testify about Jesus. He tells them to testify not by argument, but in faith, with the wisdom and the power of God. The wisdom of which Paul spoke is a wisdom not of this age. Join Pastor Lloyd as he dissects this second chapter and the secret wisdom which is of the Spirit.
Growing Up
May 29, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 3
In this chapter, the Apostle Paul addresses the spiritual immaturity he found in the Corinthian church. This was a church who understood salvation but was not yet ready for the "meat" they needed to grow. As divisions arose, Paul reminded them of the one and only foundation which is Jesus Christ. He calls them and us as God's workers to be careful as we build because the work will be revealed and its quality tested.
Our Hearts Evaluation
June 5, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 4:1–5
Pastor Lloyd begins by reminding us, as the Apostle Paul frequently reminded the early church, that our faith is very simply built on Christ of whom we are servants as we are also stewards of the mysteries of God. In this position we have an advantage that allows us to relate to the multitudes. There are three courts of evaluation in this passage and Pastor Lloyd explains each one here in, "Our Heart's Evaluation."
The Real Heart of Christianity
June 12, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 4:6–21
The Apostle Paul speaks to the heart of genuine Christianity in this passage where he employs some clever sarcasm to show that we are easily deceived. He addresses equity and two kinds of royalty, one that comes to live in luxury and be served, and Jesus who comes humbly to live alongside and serve common people. Paul toiled, suffered and endured to bear witness to the truth of a suffering Savior and he exhorts us to be imitators.
Church Discipline from a Father's Heart
June 19, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 5
Even with the Apostle Paul as the church father, there were problems in the early church which Paul addresses in these letters. In this chapter, Paul confronts the church over sexual immorality and their boasting and tolerance of it. The goal is Godly sorrow and the preservation of the Believer. We have a responsibility to love and look out for each other; when we fail to do that, church discipline sometimes becomes necessary as was the case here.
Intuitively Obvious Righteousness
July 3, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 6:1–11
We have a new life in Christ, but we live in an old, sinful world. How does this flesh out? We live in an age of "tolerance," and "don't offend." So, how do we live peaceably? In this chapter, the Apostle Paul asks six times, "Don't you know. . .?" with regards to yet another problem in the church, this one with fellow Believers. Paul offers a surprising solution to life's offenses in this segment of chapter six.
Glory God In Your Body
July 10, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 6:12–20
The further we get from God, the more focused we become on self and temporary pleasures; the end is depression and emptiness. In this segment of chapter six, Paul reminds the Believer that we have become one with Christ. The body is not for immorality, which corrupts the whole person, but for the Lord. When we question our value and uniqueness, we need look no further than the cross and the price Jesus paid with his blood. You are his temple; glorify God in your body.
Marital Satisfaction Plan
July 17, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 7:1–24
In any church or culture, people need guidance and leadership. Here, Paul teaches on marriage, divorce, singleness, the role of the wife to the husband and the husband to the wife, believers married to unbelievers, and more. This is a look at God's plan for marriage and families and at what happens when people deviate from the nuclear family, from the commitment of marriage and the raising of children.
A Single Minded Heart
July 24, 2022 • Pastor Lloyd Pulley • 1 Corinthians 7:25–40
How do we live out God's plan and design in today's "woke" and pagan culture? The Word of God is the washing we all need. Pastor Lloyd refers to Patti Height (Out of Egypt Ministries) as an example of the change that is possible just through God's word. The Corinthians lived in a slave culture; likewise today we see people becoming slaves to the culture or to their circumstances. But we can discover a richness and contentment no matter what our circumstances.
