The Lord is bringing history to a climax, both in the kingdom of man and in the coming kingdom of God. Man is going to progress into a place of ultimate degeneration, destruction, and defiance, ultimately signified by the event the Bible calls the "abomination of Desolation" and the destruction to follow for 3.5 years. However this is only the black backdrop upon which Christ will appear whitest when He returns to establish His own kingdom promised since the beginning, a kingdom of lasting peace, justice, and delight. Everything in history is leading up to this moment.
