Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is His reiteration of the Law, of God’s standard for righteousness. We are incapable of attaining this righteousness on our own. Was Jesus’ sermon only meant to describe an unattainable standard, or was he saying something more? Jesus had the gospel in mind as he spoke this sermon. Yes, he demands a righteousness greater than the Pharisees, but he also teaches of a love greater than anyone could ever know.
