For To This You Have Been Called
September 15, 2019 • Pastor Mark Mincy
Background (1st Peter):
- We have been saved by God (1:1-5)
- We are being sanctified by God(1:14-16)
Sanctification changes how we speak (2:1; 3:10; 3:9; 3:17; 4:12-19)
"If then, yours be a much-tried path, rejoice in it, because you will better show forth
the all-sufficient grace of God." Charles Spurgeon
- Sanctification changes how we SUBMIT (2:13-5:14)
The work of Christ:
- Jesus suffered for you - 1 Peter 2:24-25 - He himself bore our sins for our sins in his
body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you
have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the
shepherd and Overseer of you soul.
- Jesus left an example for you - 1 Peter 2:22-23 - He committed no sin, neither was
deceit found in his mouth, When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He
suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges
justly.
-Jesus calls you to follow his example
1 Peter 3:1-2 - Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands...
1 Peter 3:7 - Likewise husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way...
1 Peter 1:8-9 - Finally, all of you, have unity of mind...
Out Response:
- The Gospel changes us to become people who speak, suffer, and submit in such a way
that those who observe us day by day will see something distinct about our way of life,
and glorify God as a result.
For to this you have been called:
- Because christ also suffered for you,
- Leaving you an example,
- So that you might follow in his steps.
- Be A Disciple. Make Disciples.
