Jude: Contending for the Faith

Active on Mission, Immersed in Wonder

May 6, 2018 • May 6, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

We have come to the end of our study in the book of Jude as we wrap up this week by focusing in on Jude’s benediction. This Sunday we will celebrate Holy Communion together as we celebrate a God who is able. “Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”

Remember When

We are already in week 4 of our 5 week study in the book of Jude. As promised Jude has had much to say in 25 short verses. This week we are given the keys to "Contending for the Faith" as we focus in on verses 17-23. There is definitely work to be done if we are to remain on mission with the gospel.

Challenges to the Gospel

More and more in our current day and age, we are surrounded by people who cry “unfair” at God’s standard of life. There are even some in the church that desire to change the Gospel to make it more believable to the culture we live in. We as followers of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, must be able to recognize these false teachings and have the courage to FIGHT for what we know to be true in scripture.

Maintain the Purity and Unity of the Church

Pastor Pete will be delivering the message this coming Sunday. The major theme of Jude is to warn the church of false teachers. These are people in the church who are "ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ" (Jude 1:4b). What does this perversion look like? How does this kind of perversion enter the church? Learn some of the incredible insight Jude give us as he appeals to his readers to faithfully "contend for the faith." Each one is encouraged to read The Letter of Jude before coming to worship on Sunday.

A Faith Worth Fighting For

This week we begin a 5-week series on Sunday and in our small groups titled “Contending for the Faith.” This study in the Book of Jude will remind us of the battles we face today for truth and the responsibility we have been given as the church to defend the Gospel. At first we might think this defense would be against the world and it’s attacks on the church, but the battle that Jude warns us of does not come from outside the church, instead it is from “certain people” who have come into the church to lead it from the truth. This little book will show us who to contend against and how we are to contend for the faith.
