Character That Communicates

Study of James

Be The Church

March 18, 2018 • March 18, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

Authentic Faith Produces Authentic Works. I hope you agree that this has been an important journey in developing our faith. This week we will be concluding our study in the book of James. We will complete our study from last week regarding prayer and healing and the power of effective prayer and then James concludes his letter with some important words for the church as we are reminded of the importance of walking with each other, “on mission together.”

When We Pray

March 11, 2018 • March 11, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

We are coming to the close of our series in the book of James and this week we look at one of the most talked about portions of scripture in the entire letter. James brings our focus to prayer and we will look at three aspects of prayer this week; prayer and praise, prayer and healing, prayer and power. We will also consider some of the questions that are raised as we apply this passage to our lives today.

Be Patient

March 4, 2018 • March 4, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

We continue this week in the book of James as we are reminded of the importance of patience. This is one of those qualities that we get to “practice” on a regular basis. Whether it is at home with family, in the workplace, at school or with complete strangers we often are called upon to demonstrate patience. James reminds us of this important character quality of the believer.

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

February 25, 2018 • February 25, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

As we continue this week in our series “Character that Communicates” James paints a very unfavorable picture of the rich during the time of the early church. James turns his attention to those outside the church with a very stern warning. A warning that remains applicable today. Today we combined all of our services together as we celebrate Commitment Sunday. We are looking forward to bringing our commitments for Mission Forward 2018 and celebrating God’s faithfulness to His church as we prepare for this next step for Canyon Lake Community Church. Together remaining on mission with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Best Laid Plans

Most of us would agree that planning is important, whether you are planning an event or maybe just a night out with friends. If you own a business you likely have a business plan. Planning is an important part of your personal life, work life, and family. James gives us some important insights on planning this week as we continue in our series “Character that Communicates”.

What Did You Say?

Someone once said, “Nothing makes a long story short like the arrival of the person you happen to be talking about.” James has provided a number of important reminders for us as believers and as the church including how we use our tongues. This week we continue in our series “Character that Communicates” as we look at the importance of how we speak about one another. We are also looking forward to the celebration of 3 baptisms at the close of our Engage Worship Service and a visit from missionaries, Randy and Sandy Moyer, at all 3 services. We have added two more Mission Forward gatherings here at the church next week. As we approach commitment Sunday on February 25th, I want to encourage you to join us next week on Tuesday, February 13th at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel or Thursday, February 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. These gatherings have provided a great venue to clarify the purpose and process for Mission Forward 2018. The goal of these gatherings is to clarify the purpose of this capital campaign and answer any questions you may have as you prepare to pray over and consider your involvement in Mission Forward 2018. You can sign up at the table on Sunday or call the church office.

Experiencing More Grace

February 4, 2018 • February 4, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

This Sunday we will be celebrating Holy Communion as we continue in our series “Character that Communicates”. This week James unlocks the secret to experiencing even more of God’s grace in our lives. More grace? Is that possible? According to James that is exactly what God desires for His church. MORE GRACE!

When Passions Collide

January 28, 2018 • January 28, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

Last week we jumped back into the book of James with both feet as we were challenged to consider our sources. What is the source of our wisdom? Is it the wisdom of this world or the wisdom that comes from God? As we continue this week in chapter 4, we quickly discover another concern of worldly pursuits and their impact on the church. I want to remind you that we will also begin “40 Days of Prayer” this Sunday. If you joined us last year in this commitment you know this is a great opportunity for us to commit together as a church family to be in prayer over the mission God has given Canyon Lake Community Church to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in our community and around the world. The “40 Days of Prayer” guides will be available for you to pick up following the services on Sunday.

Wisdom from Above

January 21, 2018 • January 21, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick

This week we move back into our James series as our small groups resume. By now we are familiar with James’ “forthright” style and this week will be no different as he focuses our attention on wisdom. We continue in the overall theme of this book “authentic faith produces authentic works” and as we move into the second half of James we see that authentic faith produces authentic humility and humility is key if we are to receive wisdom from above.

What Did You Say?

This week we wrap up the first half of our Series in James, “Character that Communicates.” Following this lesson, we will be taking a break from our small groups and Sunday morning focus on James until mid-January. But, be assured James is wrapping up this portion of our study with his usual candor as he reminds us of the power of the tongue. Many of us may be thinking hmmmm……… not sure I want to hear what he has to say about that. The reality is, if we want to communicate the character of Christ to others, if we want to be on mission successfully, we better understand the importance of this little member of our body that wields a great deal of power and influence both inside and outside the walls of the church.

Authentic Faith (cont.)

November 5, 2017 • November 5, 2017 • Pastor Dave Dick

“For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.” Paul (Romans 3:28) “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” James (James 2:24) Well this seems a bit problematic. Are these two men, these two leaders in the early church, arguing against one another regarding the fundamental doctrine of salvation? As we continue in our series this week, we highlight the theme of this letter as James makes his most straight forward, unashamed, and unapologetic statements regarding faith and works and the relationship that they share for those who have experienced authentic faith.

Authentic Faith (cont.)

How disappointing it would be to discover your Babe Ruth signature was nothing more than a highly sophisticated reproduction of the Babe’s signature or that the painting hanging in your family room, that was sold to you as an original, is really a lithograph. It would be discouraging to find out that they are not authentic, not original, not truthful, not real. This week James continues in his theme of authentic faith with two more identifiers of authenticity. The world does not need more religious reproductions it needs to see and experience authentic faith.

Authentic Faith

October 22, 2017 • October 22, 2017 • Pastor Dave Dick

We are living in a society that authenticates everything. People are authenticated by their passports, fingerprints, retinas, and DNA. Our money includes multiple ways to authenticate each bill to determine if it is indeed real. We all must go through a process of authentication if we want to log into our bank accounts, credit cards, utility bills or email. We spend billions of dollars each year to confirm that people are who they say they are. There is even a website to authenticate designer hand bags. This week, James reminds us that it is not enough to simply identify ourselves as Christians, we must be authentic. He shares some identifiers of authentic faith as we continue in our series, "Character that Communicates".

A Call to Action

October 15, 2017 • October 15, 2017 • Pastor Dave Dick

This week as we continue in the book of James, we will focus in on the role of the Word in our lives. We know that James has addressed this letter to the early church that has been dispersed, but it is becoming apparent that there may also be those associating with the church that have not received the Word. We were reminded the first week of this series that this would be a frank conversation about the marks of a true believer. James pulls no punches as he reminds us that authentic faith produces authentic works.

Every Good and Perfect Gift

October 8, 2017 • October 8, 2017 • Pastor Dave Dick

In 1999, Don Moen released the praise song, "God is Good All the Time." It spoke of God’s goodness to us. "God is good all the time….through the darkest night, His light will shine…….We were sinners and so unworthy still for us He chose to die…….Now we can stand and testify that His love is everlasting and His mercies, they will never end……..God is good all the time." As we continue in our study in the book of James, we are reminded this week that God is good! Given the recent natural disasters and the senseless violence experienced in Las Vegas this past week, it is an important reminder for each of us. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…..” Our God is good!!
