Wisdom and the Cross

September 23, 2018 • Pastor Dave Dick • I Corinthians 1:17-31

We see crosses everywhere today. You may see them on a necklace, a t-shirt, on a church or placed on top of a hill like the one above the church. The responses to the cross are varied, for a believer it is a reminder of God’s love for us, a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice, a reminder that we are forgiven, a reminder that we have a future and a hope. But, for many today the cross elicits anger and frustration, to these individuals it is simply a symbol of a specific religious belief and for others it produces no response at all, they are simply indifferent to it. The men and women of Corinth were responding to the cross. Paul lists 3 specific responses to the cross as we close chapter 1 in the book of 1 Corinthians this week and we are left with the question how are we responding to the cross? Join us Sunday as we continue in our study “Made for More.”

When it comes to sexuality, many today are asking the question, what is the big deal? Why are Christians so uptight about our bodies? Don’t we have the right to do as we see fit with our own bodies? This week as we continue in chapter 6 of 1 Corinthians Paul reminds the church that they have been called to honor their bodies. He reminds them to “glorify God in your body.” Join us Sunday as we continue in our series “Made for More” and as we join together as the church to celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion.

In our society disputes are often settled in court. In fact, it is often the first threat uttered after a car accident, as a business partnership is dissolved, or when a husband and wife end a promise to one another. As a society we are trained to protect our rights and capitalize on the legal process. This week the apostle Paul addresses disputes and grievances within the church. What steps should we take when we have disagreements among believers?
