One of the beauties of belonging to a family or community is that you are part of something bigger than yourself. As part of this “belonging”, there is usually a sense of duty to support fellow members of that family or community. As believers in Jesus, we have been adopted into God’s family and therefore share a responsibility to be spiritually supportive of one another. This responsibility isn’t intended to be a heavy burden, but rather invites us to experience a joy-filled life as citizens of God’s Kingdom.

Although at times it may seem as though God isn’t doing anything about the evil in the world today, the Bible reveals He does indeed have a plan to return to judge the world and pour out His wrath in punishment of all sin. This event is referred to as “The Day of the Lord” numerous times throughout Scripture, and although no one knows exactly when this day will come, we can be assured it will. This knowledge should motivate all believers to be ready by being aware, being different, and being comforted.

Throughout the ages, sexual temptation and sin have been a snare to God’s people that can keep them from experiencing God’s best, and inflicting unrecognized harm upon themselves and others. The moral values of the prevailing culture often influence perception of sexual morality. The 1st Century Roman Empire, especially Greece where Thessalonica was located, was characterized by sexual immorality. Diana, the goddess of fertility was worshipped through prostitutes who served as temple priestesses. Exploitive sexual activity including men with boys, men with slaves, and men with male and female prostitutes was common. Suffice it to say that it can be difficult to be sexually pure in a world full of immorality, strong temptation, and access. Today, the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the developed world. And an estimated fifty percent of High School students will have intercourse before graduation (CDC 2018). Nevertheless, God has called His people to a high moral standard to abstain from sexual immorality, and experience pure love, and today we discover why and how.

Most followers of Jesus are aware that love is an essential aspect of Biblical faith. But what does authentic Christian love look like? God has given us the Bible to reveal Himself, His plan of redemption, His moral perfection, and His eternal faithful love. God uses His word to transform us, and to prepare us for persecution and spiritual opposition. We need to discover the effective work of God’s word, and be transformed and prepared.

God uses people to help nurture Jesus’ followers to maturity in Christ. We have freedom in Christ, but that freedom is not so that we can indulge our flesh; rather we are called to serve one another in humility and love [Gal. 5:13]. Every true follower of Jesus will embrace the blessing and responsibility to serve others, but the challenge is how to serve God by serving others with the right mind and heart.
