Purpose: The day exists to mobilize unified public prayer for America, seeking guidance for leaders and peace for the nation, often focusing on themes of repentance and hope.

Date: Designated by law in 1988 as the first Thursday in May.

Observance: Americans observe the day through prayer in churches, schools, workplaces, and community gatherings (e.g., courthouse steps).

Origin: While days of prayer were called by the Continental Congress (1775) and President Lincoln (1863), the annual, formal law was signed in 1952.

Leadership: The event is supported by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, which provides resources for local events.
