Hebrews 10:1-18

"Saying Goodbye to Religious Guilt" - Hebrews 10:1-18

We have spent weeks hammering away at some challenging topics - the priesthood, sacrifices, and the mysterious biblical figure, Melchizadek. This last section puts the final proverbial "nail" in the coffin of the former way of relating to God.

If you have been going to church for any length of time, I imagine you have experienced the use of guilt to motivate you to change or to action. People's sinfulness is hung overhead with threats of broken fellowship with God.

Well, the author of Hebrews makes some pretty radical claims that, if understood, would change the experience and expectation of church life.

Could it be that we spend too much time focused on sin? If so, then what should we be focused on instead? And if we don't remind people of their sin and guilt, then how can they be motivated to live, and give, and serve? Oh, there is a better way.

These spiritually powerful truths could change your whole perspective, and your worship, if you.....

Hebrews 11:17-19

"Heroes of Faith -- Testing" - Hebrews 11:17-19 Studying through Hebrews 11 is like being stuck in traffic, but in a good way! In traffic, progress is measured in inches not miles, and for us in Heb. 11 it is measured by verses not chapters. In fact we will cover only three verses tomorrow! Actually, that is not totally true. Yes, we will cover only three chapters in Heb. 11, we will travel back in time to look at Genesis 22 also. The author of Hebrews was writing to Jews who had a very functional knowledge of their own history, and there is an assumed level of familiarity with the stories he is referring to. But many of us are new to reading the Bible and are not familiar with the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac. So let's look at it! Slowing down here is less like being on the highway and more like being on safari. We are going slowly because there is so much to see, and we don't want to miss it! The story of Abraham and Isaac is one of the most important in the whole Bible. Central to it is the level of trust that Abraham had developed in God. Testing for him was not a scary thing, but a simple thing. What is the story? How was Abraham tested? Did he pass the test? As usual, this is a story with an application you just can live without, so..... ....VIEW and SEE!!! Steve

"It is Safe to Trust Jesus" - Hebrews 1 We begin our journey through the book of Hebrews, and in doing so we will consider if we can feel and be safe in trusting Jesus! There are a few "unknowns" about the book of Hebrews. Who wrote it? Who was the original intended audience? In what year was it written? But what we do know is that the author and the audience were believers with a strong grasp on the OT scriptures and practices. There are a lot of things that will appear as "common knowledge" to the original readers that might take a little explanation for us. So, it is assumed the audience were Jewish believers in Jesus. The challenge they faced is that, in the hard times they were facing, they were losing faith in Jesus and going back to putting their trust back in some of their old ways. After all....God had given them these things to begin with, right? Hebrews is an utterly compelling argument that it is safe -- safer than anything else -- to trust Jesus. And tomorrow we will see why we can trust what He says! So... ...VIEW and SEE Steve

Hebrews 2:1-9

"In Danger of Drifting" - Hebrews 2:1-9 Having been reminded just who Jesus is, and just how much His word should matter to them [and to us], the first of five warnings in the book of Hebrews is given. I think you will understand the warning if you think about the phrase, "out of sight, out of mind". It can be hard to mentally keep track of people and things with which we don't interact regularly. It's hard when it is a person. And it's really hard when that person is you! You wonder why no one has called or checked in with you. And then you begin to imagine that no one cares, and no one has noticed. Well, things...and people...can slip our minds if we don't pay careful attention to them. They seem to slip away unnoticed when our attention has been directed to other things. This is precisely the warning that we get in Hebrews 2. But the warning is not about people in general, but salvation! Wait....are you saying that I can lose my salvation like I would lose track of that person who used to sit near me? That sounds a little scary. Remember, Hebrews is not directed to unbelievers, but to believers -- Jewish believers in Jesus who are now in danger of turning back to trusting their religious system to save them.
