"Lessons in Leadership" - Ezra 7-8
Chapters 7-8. You may or may not remember that this chapters 1-6 were really a "Part 1", ending with the dedication of the second temple that began with Cyrus' decree that the Jews could go back.
Chapters 7-10 are "Part 2", introducing us to a dedicated scribe named Ezra. Yes, it is the same person whose name gives us the title of the book we are reading! He gathers a second "wave" of pilgrims to go back to Jerusalem. Actually, the small number of people are more of a "ripple" than a wave compared to the first group that went back.
We get to observe Ezra and notice some of the leadership skills he demonstrates. Jesus talked about "servant leadership", the epistles talk about the qualities of leaders in the church, and we see plenty of examples of bad leadership in the church and in the world.
Let me assure you, Ezra is not playing games. He is personally committed and no one would doubt that he really believes what he says he believes. And the story gets more intense in ch's 9 and 10! Ezra is a reformer before Martin Luther, and his ministry brings people to repentance!
What are this guys qualities? What are the keys to his leadership? That's what we will discover together tonight as we read. So....
