The parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee is a story that Jesus told to illustrate the importance of humility and repentance. It contrasts the attitude of two men who went to the temple to pray: one was a self-righteous Pharisee who boasted about his good deeds, and the other was a humble tax collector who pleaded for God’s mercy. Jesus said that the tax collector, not the Pharisee, went home justified before God.

The Parable of the Poor Rich Man Who Couldn't Rest

In Luke 12:1-12, Jesus is telling his disciples to live daily with the supreme goal of knowing God and bringing him glory, to abide with the perspective that in all things, the sovereign Creator of the universe is worthy of their highest praise and obedience. To prioritize the eternal and the spiritual as opposed to the temporary and earthly. This truth is further explained in our passage for today: Luke 12:13-34. Here, a man from the crowd interrupts Jesus and asks him to tell his brother to give him his inheritance. Jesus answers this man with the parable of the Foolish Farmer. From this parable, we learn that belonging to Christ is a treasure greater than any other belonging.
