Note to the Student Part 2

2 Timothy 2:1-13

Paul is exhorting Timothy as his student to remain faithful in the calling given to him by Jesus Christ. His perspective was being altered by the world around him, so Paul repeats the most important things to keep in mind as Timothy struggles with the world around him. This is then our exhortation when we are struggling with the same things.

1. Like a soldier, we shouldn't get distracted by the world we left behind.
2. Like an athlete, we shouldn't disqualify ourselves from our pursuit of Jesus.
3. Like a farmer, we should get to know Jesus for ourselves while we share Him with everyone else.

Paul gives a bleak picture of the future that we are only seeing the beginning of today. Where virtue is despised and narcissism is praised, it all stems from a desire to escape conviction. The Holy Spirit's sole purpose is to convict us of sin. The more we recognize His voice through His word, the more capable we'll be of growth and even salvation itself. 1. The person who doesn't learn from anyone beyond themselves and those like them will never repent. 2. The person who grows closer to Jesus first recognizes there is a difference between Him and them. 3. The metric by which we judge whether anything we hear is of God or not is through the Word of God.

Paul is speaking to his student Timothy in the same context that we need to be spoken to in the world we live in today. The world never has and still isn't responding in favor of the gospel, but this isn't a cause for us to be afraid. We need to be prepared to give an answer as the Holy Spirit enables us and from that place of security we will not be ruled by fear. 1. Paul was sent out to communicate the Gospel. What people thought about him was irrelevant. 2. Timothy didn't need to be afraid so long as his hope remained in what he was also called to share. 3. Paul sought refreshment from the people he had taught and learned from as well as to encourage and educate them.
