Day 156 - Read 2 Samuel 21-22

September 26, 2024 • 2 Samuel 21—22

There was a famine for three years in the land of Israel because Saul put the Gibeonites to death when he was king. David sought atonement with the Gibeonites, and they asked for seven sons of Saul so they could put them to death by hanging. David took the bones of Saul, Jonathan, and the seven who were hanged, and buried them in the land of Benjamin. Israel continued to fight the Philistines. Four descendants from the giants in Gath were killed by the hand of David and his servants. David praised God for the power and mercy He showed by saving him from his enemies and protecting him from those seeking to overthrow and kill him. He praised God for blessing those who obeyed His commands.

Day 155 - Read 2 Samuel 19-20

September 25, 2024 • 2 Samuel 19—20

Joab confronted David for mourning over Absalom instead of celebrating the victory over those who sought to kill David. The people of Israel rallied behind David, and he called for the unity of Israel. David forgave his enemies. A man named Sheba led a rebellion against David. Amasa was sent to call the men of Judah together, but he delayed beyond the time appointed by David. Joab killed Amasa. Joab pursued Sheba to Abel of Beth-maacah. Joab threatened to tear the walls of the city down, but a woman reasoned with him to spare the city in return for the head of Amasa. The head of Amasa was thrown to Joab, and Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.

Day 154 - Read 2 Samuel 17-18

September 24, 2024 • 2 Samuel 17—18

Ahithophel told Absalom to allow him to choose twelve thousand men to pursue and kill David. Hushai refuted Ahithophel’s counsel and gave Absalom a plan to conquer David, then Hushai sent word to David of the impending attack. David prepared his army under the leadership of Joab, Abishai, and Ittai. He told them to deal gently with Absalom. Absalom was caught in the limbs of a tree while fleeing a battle. Joab took three javelins and thrust them into the heart of Absalom. Ten armor-bearers of Joab struck Absalom and he died. Absalom had no son to keep his name, so he had a pillar as a monument to his name. David wept over the death of Absalom.

Day 153 - Read 2 Samuel 15-16

September 23, 2024 • 2 Samuel 15—16

Absalom conspired to overthrow David, his father. David fled Jerusalem. He ordered the ark be kept in Jerusalem. David went to the Mount of Olives, mourning because his son sought to overthrow him. David sent a friend named Hushai to Jerusalem to act as a counselor to Absalom so he could provide information back to David. Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, met up with David and gave him provisions. Shimei, a man of the house of Saul, cursed David and called him a man of blood. Hushai met with Absalom and committed to serve him as he had served David. Ahithophel counseled Absalom to sleep with David’s concubines who were left to tend David’s house, and Absalom did
