Day 90 - Read Deuteronomy 5-6

July 22, 2024 • Deuteronomy 5—6

God gave the ten commandments to Israel in the midst of the mountain and fire. God’s people were urged to obey God and be in awe of Him. God is one God and should be loved with heart, soul, and all might. Moses commanded all of Israel to walk in the Law and to teach the Law to their children at all times. These commands were part of prayers memorized and recited daily by the Jews. Children memorized these prayers at an early age. As a Jewish boy, Jesus would have memorized and recited these scriptures daily. Israel was instructed to remember God’s provisions and to respect God’s power. Israel was to become a testimony to their descendants of God bringing them out of Egypt and giving the promised land into their hands.

Day 130 - Read 1 Samuel 1-2

August 31, 2024 • 1 Samuel 1—2

Hannah was married to Elkanah. Hannah and Elkanah went to worship God at Shiloh. Hannah was not able to have children. She made a vow to God that if He would allow her to have a son, she would dedicate all his days to the Lord. Hannah prayed with great distress. Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk. Hannah explained herself. Eli sent her away with blessings. Hannah conceived and bore a son named Samuel. Hannah took her young son to the house of the Lord and dedicated him to His service. Hannah prayed, recognizing the greatness, the power, and the sovereignty of God. Eli’s sons disrespected the house of the Lord, but Samuel honored the Lord. The Lord rebuked Eli’s household because of their sin against God and His house.

Day 129 - Read Ruth 30

Ruth 3—4

Naomi told Ruth to go to the threshing floor where Boaz would lie down for the night. Ruth followed Naomi’s instructions. Boaz woke and saw Ruth at his feet. Boaz told Ruth there was a kinsman who was a closer relative than he. According to the law, the closest relative had the opportunity to redeem a widow (take her as his wife). Boaz told Ruth he would redeem her if the closest kinsman chose not to. The kinsman gave up his right to the land and to take Ruth as his wife. Boaz claimed the right as the next closest kinsman to redeem both. Ruth gave birth to a son named Obed who would be the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Day 128 - Read Ruth 1-2

August 29, 2024 • Ruth 1—2

A woman named Naomi was married to Elimelech. They had two sons, Mahlon and Chilion. They were from Bethlehem, but they traveled to live in the country of Moab during a famine in the land. Mahlon and Chilion married women from Moab named Orpah and Ruth. Elimelech died. About ten years passed, then Mahlon and Chilion died. Naomi insisted her daughter-in-laws return to their mothers’ homes to find husbands. Ruth refused to leave Naomi, vowing to remain with her throughout her life. Naomi and Ruth journeyed back to Bethlehem to seek food. Ruth found favor with Boaz, a relative of Elimelech, because of her good deeds toward Naomi. Boaz allowed her to gather (glean) among his workers in the fields he owned.
