Day 130 - Read 1 Samuel 1-2

August 31, 2024 • 1 Samuel 1—2

Hannah was married to Elkanah. Hannah and Elkanah went to worship God at Shiloh. Hannah was not able to have children. She made a vow to God that if He would allow her to have a son, she would dedicate all his days to the Lord. Hannah prayed with great distress. Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk. Hannah explained herself. Eli sent her away with blessings. Hannah conceived and bore a son named Samuel. Hannah took her young son to the house of the Lord and dedicated him to His service. Hannah prayed, recognizing the greatness, the power, and the sovereignty of God. Eli’s sons disrespected the house of the Lord, but Samuel honored the Lord. The Lord rebuked Eli’s household because of their sin against God and His house.

Day 166 - Read 1 Kings 15-16

October 6, 2024 • 1 Kings 15—16

Southern Kingdom – Judah (included Jerusalem). Northern Kingdom – Israel. Abijam reigned over Judah three years. Abijam died and his son Asa reigned over Judah for forty-one years. Nadab reigned over Israel for two years. Baasha struck Nadab down and began his reign over Israel in the third year Asa was king of Judah. Baasha died. His son Elah began to reign over Israel in the twenty-sixth year Asa was king of Judah. Zimri struck Elah down and began his reign over Israel in the twenty-seventh year Asa was king of Judah. The people of Israel made Omri king over Israel in the thirty-first year Asa was king of Judah. Omri died. His son Ahab began his reign over Israel the thirty-eighth year Asa was king of Judah.

Day 165 - Read 1 Kings 13-14

A prophet of God confronted Jeroboam. Jeroboam stretched out his hand against him and his hand dried up. The prophet entreated the Lord and the king’s hand returned to normal. The prophet was tricked by another man to go into his house and eat, but God had told the prophet not to stay and eat. The prophet was attacked and killed by a lion when he left the man’s house because of his disobedience. Jeroboam continued in his evil ways. God made it known through the prophet Ahijah that He would cut the house of Jeroboam off from Israel. Jeroboam died after he reigned for twenty-two years. His son, Nadab, reigned in his place. Rehoboam reigned for seventeen years, then he died. His son Abijam reigned in his place.

Day 164 - Read 1 Kings 11-12

October 4, 2024 • 1 Kings 11—12

Solomon married many women from other tribes against God’s command. His heart was turned from the Lord to other gods. God raised adversaries against Solomon because of his disobedience. God promised to take eleven tribes from the son of Solomon and make Jeroboam the king of Israel. Solomon died after reigning for forty years, and Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, was made the king of Israel. He acted harshly, refusing to listen to the counsel of the elders. Israel rebelled and made Jeroboam their king, leaving only the tribe of Judah under the leadership of Rehoboam. Jeroboam made two golden calves and the people of Israel gave sacrifices to these false gods.
