The Resurrection and Work
July 30, 2017 • Murray Lee
Sometimes, it is tempting to compartmentalize our faith and work into separate categories of the sacred and secular. The Gospel corrects us, for as far as the curse is found, the Resurrection reaches farther. Throughout this series, the way that the Resurrection affects our work has been a part of each sermon; yet it is important to dwell on this point further, drawing some very practical conclusions. The Resurrection affects our work because the Resurrection changes everything.

How we think about our work reveals our understanding of the Gospel. Are we so busy that we think our work is at best tangential, and at worst unrelated, to the Gospel? The Apostle Paul teaches that Christians must learn to ask new questions about our work and to see our work in a different light, as a reflection of our understanding of salvation.
Cultivation

Many times, we are unable to articulate how our work participates with God in the cultivation of His creation. The reason for this is that we focus on bearing God's image in the kind of work we do, rather than in the act of work itself. When God's people fulfill the basic and specific work God gives us in Genesis 1 and 2, we participate with Him in the cultivation of creation.

What does the Bible say about work? Does it tell us that work is a necessary evil that we must do so that we can make money to support our lifestyles? Does it teach that our worth is tied to our position at work, or that there are more and less important jobs? No. The Bible shows us that as we work, we model God, we bring beauty to His creation, and we experience freedom and rest.
