A Song of Brokenness

We live in a culture where broken things have very little value. We've all had possessions that, at one time, we loved but as soon as it was broken we just tossed it away.

As Christ-followers, we ought to be very thankful that our God doesn't look upon broken people like that. In fact, our God highly values a spirit of brokenness in His people.

Biblical brokenness is an attitude that feels the weight of sin, the weight of the Gospel, and our desperate need for the grace and mercy of God. It is to be the normal state of being for all who would follow Jesus. This week we will learn to sing a song of brokenness.

A Song of Hope

God has wired humanity for rhythm and rhyme. We use music to both celebrate and mourn and a majority of our most sacred, special, or significant events are marked by music. The Jewish people have traditionally celebrated Passover with the singing of six songs known as the "Hallel Psalms." These are composed of Psalm 113-118. What that means is that Jesus, on His final Passover celebration with the disciples in the upper room, would have sung this great song of hope in trying times with them. It is our prayer that we, like Jesus, learn to sing this great song of hope as well.

A Song of Gratitude

We live in a world prone to discouragement and anxiety. We are constantly pressured to forsake the present in exchange for a bygone past or an uncertain future. We often find ourselves chasing uncatchable dreams and trying to satisfy insatiable appetites. And we're left wondering if there's an antidote to it all. There is. It's called gratitude. David, the sweet singer of Israel, gives us the key in Psalm 103. It is to be thankful for the many blessings that our heavenly Father has bestowed upon us in this present moment. Do you want to avoid a life of regret? Do you want to learn to be present? David tells us how in this great song of gratitude and blessing.

A Psalm of Rejoicing

As we continue through the Psalms of summer, we will be looking at psalm 97 this week: A Psalm of rejoicing. We have so many reasons to rejoice no matter what our circumstances are. As we explore this Psalm, we will see 6 reasons why as believers we can rejoice. Each reason begins with remembering something about God or who we are as Christians. I would encourage you even as you read this to pause and think about reasons you can have a song of rejoicing.
