[22] And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. [23] Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.” (ESV)

The Final Straw

1 Samuel 15:1-23 • July 16, 2017 • Jay Thomas

Last week, we looked closely at the groanings of Israel for a king "like the other nations." Last Sunday, Pastor Jay skips ahead to chapter 15 to the trappings that came with their wish for an earthly king (Saul) to rule over them rather than God himself. There's a lot of application in the passage for us in the 21st century, most importantly, you can't manage sin; but must ultimately put sin to death. NOTES: As promised, we weren’t able to go into detail today in 1 Samuel 15 into a biblical answer for a common objective, “Doesn’t the Bible condone genocide in the Old Testament?” I wanted to provide a helpful biblical treatise on the subject by Dr. Gordon Hugenberger from 2001 at Park Street Church in Boston, MA. You can read it here: https://gospelobsessed.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/biblical-ethics-of-war-hugenberger.pdf You can also reference Dr. Gordon Hugenberger’s sermon on 1 Samuel 15 that spends much more time on this issue.
