Deuteronomy 1:29-31 (4/19/23)

Play To Your Strengths

April 19, 2023 • Benham Brothers • Deuteronomy 1:29–31

Wisdom says “Play to your strengths.”

God has given you certain strengths, and you need to stay in your lane in order to fully utilize them.

Your strength can be a talent or a skill.

Talent - you’re born w/a natural bent (strength).

Skill - you learned something and now you’re good at it.

But “Play to your strengths”must be balanced by “Walk in obedience.”

Why? Because God often asks us to do things we’re not good at in order to show His strength through our weakness.

EX: Creating systems for our business.

Backstory - Moses is preparing the people to take the Promised Land.

He gives them a history lesson so they won’t forget God’s role in their lives.

One of the things he reminds them of is when they chose to “play to their strengths” rather than “walk in obedience.”

Vs 29-33 - “Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. 30 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 31 and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.32 In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God, 33 who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.

The result of playing to their strengths rather than walking in obedience:

Vs 34-35 - “Then the Lord heard what you said, he was angry and solemnly swore: 35 “No one from this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your ancestors…”

The result was 40 years of wandering in a wilderness when they could have been chilling in the Promised Land.

Playing to your strengths only can result in not inheriting the place God wants you to be.

It’s a scary place at first, but a great place once you’re there!
