Psalms for Gaining Confidence: Message 1

We all have a morning routine. We rise, dress, enjoy coffee, brush our teeth and catch up on the news of the day. Dr. John suggests that we add one more discipline — especially if we are facing a challenging day. Psalm 3 is a morning prayer which reminds us that God alone can lift our head to face the day with confidence.

Since confidence is defined as a sense of self-assurance, we may assume that the source of confidence can be found within us. We simply need to boost our own morale. That is not the teaching of Scripture. In this series from the Psalms, Dr. John points to God as the foundation and sustenance for our hope in this life and the life to come.

Hope for the Persecuted

Trouble comes from different places. There are the troubles we bring upon ourselves or the troubles sent from God for our discipline. But Jesus promised us that we would face troubles from the world. Dr. John points to Psalm 7 as a reflection of Jesus' promise. God has overcome the world. Praying When Our Enemies Triumph

Being disciplined is never pleasant; yet it is a necessary part of the parent/child relationship. It is also a necessary part of being a child of God. In Psalm 6, David prays under the heavy hand of God. Dr. John reminds us that David prays as a child confident in the love and mercy of the Father.

Will God Hear My Prayer?

What assurance do we have that God hears our prayers? In Psalm 5, David asks God to hear his groaning and cries. The king was confident that God listens to the repentant, humble heart, which relies upon God's steadfast love. David was not disappointed.
