Joseph's desire was not to get even with his brothers or to make them feel sorry for how they had mistreated him and their father, Jacob. Rather, he put a carefully crafted plan into place that would bring about their repentance, forgiveness, and restoration.

Promises Accepted and Rejected

To put it mildly, Joseph's family life was a mess. His father, Jacob, loved him more than his 11 other brothers; he rubbed it in their faces; and they hated him for it. His brothers were jealous and violent. They sold Joseph into slavery and lied to their father, saying he was dead. How could such a family remain intact? How could God use them to bless the world? God had a gracious plan for them and a wonderful plan for Joseph. The Lord shaped and equipped Joseph to carry out his good and saving purposes. God has similar designs and uses for you and me as we live our lives in his kingdom. Nothing is ordinary or accidental as we follow Jesus!

Joseph Suffers at Home

As a young man Joseph's home life was in disarray. We can understand why when we read that he was his father's favorite son with 10 jealous older brothers who hated his guts. Yet even in the midst of such chaos and discord God was guiding and shaping Joseph and his brothers towards his eternal purposes. When our lives (or seasons in our lives) are littered with brokenness and pain, we trust that God has not ceased being at work.

Horror at Home; Peaceful Preparations in Egypt

Our Sunday study is walking through the life of Joseph and the practical lessons God has to teach us through his life. God has plans for us and for his kingdom that are more than we can often see or know. Yet he works through us (and yes, even through our sins and mistakes) to accomplish his eternal purpose. This week we will see how God prepared Joseph as a slave in Potiphar's house and his brothers for their eventual repentance.
