Flight from God always leads downward. When we run from Him we rarely experience any sense of the kind of peace we were designed to enjoy from God. Running from God not only costs us but those around us as well. Most of us have the capacity to make stupid choices and look back and say, “I can’t believe I did that.” All of us need, at one time or another, a second chance. The irony of the story is that Jonah emerges as the chief antagonist. No one in the story deserves God’s grace and mercy less; no one deserves God’s anger more. When you’ve been forgiven much, the right response to God is always love and obedience. The Gospel shows that we win by losing, we triumph through defeat, we achieve power through service, and we become rich by giving ourselves away. The Gospel is good news for losers.
