Fasting in Distress

SCRIPTURE
2 Chronicles 20:2-3 NIV Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.

NUGGET
In his distress, Jehosophat called for prayer and fasting throughout the land. He knew without God, there was no chance of them not being overtaken. I was never taught about the importance of fasting or even how it worked, exactly, when I was growing up. But it’s powerful. When we fast, we deny our bodies, our “flesh,” something it craves. As we endure that craving, we press into God in prayer and seek His help and guidance. Denying our flesh helps us hear from God easier and it’s a sacrifice He honors.

ACTIVATION
If you’ve never fasted before, start small. You don’t have to give up all food for long periods of time. Some people are not physically able to do that and that’s okay. The idea is to deny your flesh something it wants. For me, it always starts with coffee! Ask the Lord what He wants you to fast. Maybe it’s coffee for a day, or sugar for 3 days, or something else he puts on your heart. Then be intentional about spending time with God about your situation.

PRAYER
Lord, in my distress, I come to You. Help and guide me. Speak to me as I fast and seek to hear Your voice, O God. Thank You for being faithful to save!
