BIBLE MEMORIZATION

WHY DO IT?

1) Memorizing Scripture strengthens my faith. “Faith comes

by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Ro 10:17).

When I memorize Scripture, I’m hearing the word of Christ in

my head.

2) Memorizing Scripture gives me power to resist Satan and

his temptations, a weapon that he cannot defeat. Satan is

disarmed and rendered powerless by God’s word. Remember

Jesus’ recitation of Scripture to him in the wilderness? Satan

fled. Memorizing enables me to recall His word in my exact

moment of need. “…Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the

word of God…Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (Eph

6:17) (Jas 4:7)

3) Memorizing Scripture guards my mind by making it easier

to detect error — and the world is filled with error, because the

god of this world is a liar. (John 8:44, 2 Cor 4:4, 1 John 5:19)

4) Memorizing Scripture provides the words to minister to

others in need. Someone’s need for comfort and counsel will

hardly ever be when we’ve got our Bible handy. Not only that,

but speaking the word of God spontaneously from the heart has

unusual power. “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a

setting of silver.” (Prv 25:11)
