The question that arises is this brief letter was written to a godly mother and her children or is this “the elect lady” referring to a local church and that “her children” are the believers fellowshipping in the church. Or does this “chosen lady” would then refer to a sister church that was sending Christian greetings. While it is true that John does address a group in this letter (note the plural in 2Jn 1:6, 2Jn 1:8, 2Jn 1:10, 2Jn 1:12), it is also true that he addresses an individual (2Jn 1:1, 2Jn 1:4-5, 2Jn 1:13)

Overcoming The World 1 John 5:1-12 NAS95 2024-02-18-SUN-62-1JO-005-001 ·        “Know” is one of the key words of this letter. ·        The word “know” is found 36x in 29 verses. • “We know that we have come to know” God (2:3). • “We know we are in him” (2:5). • “We know that when he appears, we shall be like him” (3:2). • “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers” (3:14). • “We know that we belong to the truth” (3:19). • “We know that [God] lives in us” (3:24). • “We know that we live in” God (4:13). • “I write these things to you ... so that you may know that you have eternal life” (5:13). • “We know that [God] hears us” (5:15). • “We know that we are children of God” (5:19). ·        Many Christians are discouraged because they do not feel sure that they are saved. ·        A newborn babe doesn’t knows it has been born, but it has. ·        God wants every believer to be assured of his salvation o  so, in every situation he can have perfect peace in God our Rock. o  Assurance comes with maturity. ·        We believe it is possible for a Christian’s faith to get stronger and stronger, until it reaches the full assurance of knowledge.
