Esther chapter 9 introduces what happened when the 13th day of Adar arrived. This day the edict stipulated the Jews to defend themselves accordingly. The book of Esther tells the story of the Jewish woman who became queen of Persia and saved her people from a plot to destroy them. In Esther Chapter 10, a very brief chapter, her cousin Mordecai is elevated to a place of power beside her husband, the king.

In Esther Chapter 5, Esther the consort of the King of Persia, throws a banquet for the King and his Prime Minister, the devious Haman. She learned through her cousin and foster father, Mordecai, that Haman was plotting to slaughter the Jewish people and Esther is a Jew herself. Not only are her people and her foster father in danger, but she is in danger herself, as being the queen will not spare her life.

In Esther chapter 2, King Xerxes, a man of extraordinary wealth and power, calms down from the decree he had issued to Queen Vashti after she refused to attend to him. As a result of her refusal, the king’s assistants proposed a search for virgins for the king to choose from. As such, commissioners from different provinces were assigned to bring all beautiful virgins into the harem of the citadel of Susa under Hegai’s watch, who was the king’s eunuch.
