DAY 5 - Today’s devotional was written by Joy, Co-Leader of RLM, and today’s reading is: John 1:35-51. Come and see. Our yes takes faith that always pays off.
“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only [Son] from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and called out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who is coming after me has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.'" For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; God the only [Son,] who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained [Him.] ... And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you seeking?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the tenth hour. ... The next day He decided to go to Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow Me." ... Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the prophets [also wrote:] Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!" Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good be from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." [John 1:14-18, 38-39, 43, 45-46 NASB20]
“Come and see..” The invitation to experience Jesus requires our movement towards Him and away from our thoughts, desires and actions. James says, if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you (James 4:8). Again, the Word says in Jeremiah 29:13, “when you seek me with all of your heart then you will find me.”
When my oldest daughter was just a baby I experienced what these passages really mean. I was standing at the kitchen sink doing dishes one day and Carley was in her walker in the next room. I called out to her saying, “Carley, Carley where are you?” I knew where she was, but I was calling out for her to come to me. While doing this, I had an open vision and saw Perry and I having a picnic in the park when we noticed Carley was gone. Frantically, I took off running leaving our picnic behind, I needed to find where Carley was and that is all that mattered. This time I was calling out “Carley, Carley where are you?” but my intention was much different. I needed to get to her and I didn't care about what I was doing any more. Such a stark difference in the way I was calling out for Carley in both these scenarios. The Lord spoke to me and said, “Many of My children call out to Me like you called out for Carley, but they do not intend on leaving what they are doing behind. They want Me to come to them and do things their way.” He went on to say, “But when they call out to Me, like you did in the vision, then they will find me.”
1. What are you asking from God? How are you seeking Him?
2. What do you need to say no to in order to find God in your situation?
