WR21 Fast - Day 14

WEEK TWO | Jesus Says Yes Through His Works and Words.

May 11, 2024 • Joy Chickonoski • John 13, Philippians 2

DAY 14 - Today’s devotional was written by Joy, Co-Leader of RLM, and today’s reading is: John 13. Jesus washes feet: Say “yes” to His cleansing.

“[Jesus,] knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going [back] to God, got up from supper and laid His outer garments [aside;] and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, You are washing my feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later." Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me." [John 13:3-8 NASB20]

“Jesus Knowing”… who He was…served others with unconditional love. A true leader is a servant-leader. Someone who has his identity rooted in the love of Jesus and considers others more important than themselves (Philippians 2). The world’s system of acceptance is rooted in meeting certain criteria and this is a breeding ground for insecurity. When we are insecure about who we are and our value, we will demand respect and honor from others. Instead of serving like Jesus, we will want to Lord over people and that is not true leadership. This is what Peter was having a hard time with. He thought it was beneath Jesus to serve Him in this lowly way. Jesus did not feel honored by Peter’s refusal. Instead Peter put himself on display, if he couldn't receive the servanthood of Jesus then he would not replicate it!

1. Ask Holy Spirit if you have been refusing to be loved unconditionally by God?

2. Is there an area of insecurity in you because your basis of acceptance is rooted in meeting other people’s expectations? Ask Jesus to come and wash your feet. Let Him affirm your value and cleanse you from the insecurity.

3. Now ask Holy Spirit how you can wash someone else’s feet. How can you serve others unconditionally? Share what you are learning with your family and or prayer partner, maybe wash their feet.
