WR21 Fast - Day 10

WEEK TWO | Jesus Says Yes Through His Works and Words.

May 7, 2024 • Melissa Ilovsky • John 5:1–15

DAY 10 - Today’s devotional was written by Melissa, Children’s Ministry Leader of RLM, and today’s reading is: John 5:1-24. Jesus says “yes” to the man at the pool of Bethesda.

“Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie; the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?” The invalid replied,“Sir, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.” So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. Later, Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.” [John 5:1-15 NIV]

Today, we ponder the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5, where individuals with ailments sought healing. Those who were blind, lame, and paralyzed found restoration, including a man who had been incapacitated for 38 years.

When Jesus asked him, "Do you want to get well?" The man listed reasons why he couldn't be healed, citing lack of assistance or not being the first to reach the spot where healing occurred. Jesus replied, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!" It was as straightforward as that. Reflecting on this narrative, I recall moments when I've felt stuck on my own mat, dwelling in despair or self-pity without seeking help from Jesus.

If you are familiar with this cycle of self-pity, envy, or feeling too weak to break free, I encourage you to join forces with Jesus. Rise from your mat, and move forward! Let's break the cycle, discover strength, and trust in Jesus. I pray for all of us to have the courage and peace to progress alongside Jesus, seeking His guidance and drawing strength from Him to pick up our mats and walk.

1. Are there areas of defeat in your life where you’ve justified reasons for being stuck instead of trusting Jesus and stepping into victory?

2. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal to you areas where self-pity, envy or personal weakness has caused you to feel stuck and defeated.

3. How can you partner with Jesus and experience victory in areas where you’ve been prone to defeat? Ask Holy Spirit for revelation and journal what’s revealed.
