Are We Fully Obedient with David Watson (Part 1)
May 25, 2021 • David Watson, Rebecca Ewing
Since obedience is our love language to God, are we as obedient as we think we are? David Watson explains that incomplete obedience is disobedience. We're missing out on so much God has when we omit commands of Christ just as much as when we commit sins against God. This episode answers these questions: Can we be obedient in some but not all? What examples from the Bible do we see of incomplete obedience? What benefits are we missing when we're not completely obedient? What are sins we're missing in ourselves? Among each other? Regarding our mission? In our communities?
The Importance of Obedience Based Disciple Making with David Watson (Part 1)
May 18, 2021 • David Watson, Rebecca Ewing
Obedience is how we tell Jesus we love him. But we miss this in the modern church. One reason we aren't seeing movement in the Western world is because we read the Bible to increase our knowledge, not our obedience. In this episode, David Watson explains why it's so important to follow Christ's commission to "teach them to obey all that I have commanded."
"I Will" Statements That Will Ruin Your DBS
March 30, 2021 • Rebecca Ewing, Paul Watson
An "I Will" statement is your answer to one of the most important questions in a Discovery Bible Study, "If this passage is from God, how must we change?" An "I Will" statement can make or break your DBS. The difference between being a convert and a disciple is obedience. So here are some applications people often give that can be detrimental to a fruitful Discovery Group, and how to respond to them!

Sure, Discovery Bible Study can work in third world countries like India and Africa. But what about the United States or Europe? And how does it mix with Christian culture? David Watson joins us again to provide insight into how Christians may struggle with DBS in their culture. DBS was designed to strip culture from Bible study. Learn how you, your Christian friends, and your lost friends can get the most out of the process!
Helping Christians Share the Story
September 15, 2020 • Rebecca Ewing, Paul Watson
Sharing a Bible story doesn’t come naturally for most Christians. Whether they don’t know what to say, are too afraid of what someone will think, or don’t have anyone to tell in the first place, it’s easy to leave this part out of a Discovery Bible Study or Disciple Making Community. In today’s podcast, Paul Watson and Beck Ewing talk about how to help Christians get better at telling others what they’re learning in the Bible. We’ll cover topics like the role Conversation Quadrants play and how meeting the needs of the community can provide an opportunity to share the Scripture story. The reality is that people aren’t actually going to be that off-put when you bring up spiritual things—so go for it! Part 2 (or the premium portion) is about helping Christians move from couch potato to their first disciple.
Case for Creation to Christ (Part 1)
June 30, 2020 • Rebecca Ewing, Paul Watson
When you open a book, where do you start? At the beginning! When you are helping someone discover God, where do you start? Today's podcast is about why we use the Creation to Christ Scripture list in a Discovery Bible Study. It's 26 passages that begins in Genesis and ends with Jesus. Many times we start with Jesus as we're introducing someone to the Word of God. But most people don't know who Jesus is or why his death and resurrection are necessary. Learn how to start a strong foundation with those you're discipling that can lead to a movement by listening today! In part 2, we answer these questions: Can I break up long passages? Can I add passages? Are there other lists? Which list do I use for Christians?
Turning Volunteer Opportunities Into Disciple Making Opportunities (Part 1)
March 18, 2020 • Paul Watson, Rebecca Ewing
Volunteering is an excellent way to engage people who don't know Jesus. But sometimes volunteering in and of itself isn't as effective as it could be. In the heat of meeting needs, we want to intentionally leave room for conversation and relationship building. And as disciple makers, we want to choose the volunteer opportunities that allow us to see the same people on a regular basis. So how do we turn volunteer opportunities into disciple making opportunities? Join us in the CDM Podcast to talk about just that! In part 2, we go into the importance of the "needs of the community" question in the Discovery Bible Study process. This is one of the steps that lead to multiplication and showing the community that you're being transformed by the Word. Visit http://www.patreon.com/faithworks for part 2. DBS Tips Retelling the Story
February 18, 2020 • Rebecca Ewing, Paul Watson
"Yeah, for the sake of time, let's skip the retelling part..." is exactly what you don't want to say in a Discovery Bible Study! Every element of the DBS process is essential. Today's podcast is about the element of retelling the story. It's the part of the meeting where you have people say the passage in their own words after you've read it. This helps with comprehension and with sharing the story with someone else. Retaining what you read is a lost art in today's fast-paced society. Furthermore, people won't be able to tell it to those outside the group without first practicing in the group. Listen to hear tips on this part of the DBS process that you can use today! Part 2 is about making sharing the story a more natural process.
"I Will" Statements (Part 1)
October 8, 2019 • Rebecca Ewing, Paul Watson
We have a tendency to be abstract with our application of Scripture. A core part of the Disciple Making Movement process is the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method. After reading a passage from the Bible you ask, "What does this say about God? What does this say about people?" And then you go onto ask, "If this is true, what difference does it make in our lives?" This is often the toughest part of a DBS to get. But getting too good "I will" statements can be the difference between a group that multiplies and a group that doesn't. In this CDM Podcast episode, Paul Watson and Beck Ewing go over that part of the DBS process and why making concrete, time-bound and small action steps is so important in the movement process. "If you love me you will obey my commandments." -John 14:15
